chest x ray

pregnancy

what are the NPO rules preoperatively ?
no solids 6 hours before anesthesia
clear fluids only 2 hours before
skin prep - shower with antibacterial soap
what are the NPO rules if the surgery is delayed ?
clear fluids should be allowed until 2 hours before the surgery
what are the two methods of bowel preparations for pre op ?
mechanical - diet, purgatives, enemas
chemical - oral antibiotics (neomycin), IV antibiotics at induction of anesthesia

children and diabetic patients
life and limb threatening operations

what are day or same day surgeries ?
admission and discharge happens within 12 hours
what is outpatient surgery ?
not admitted to a ward facility

surgery not requiring full sterile theatre facilities

23 hour admission with early morning discharge
what is short stay surgery ?
admission of up to 72 hours
what is the optimal analgesia and anesthesia to be use pre op ?
multimodal analgesia with paracetamol and NSAIDS
how long should vital signs be stable for for discharge ?
stable for at least 1 hour
what are the pre operative medications ?
prophylactic antibiotics
narcotic analgesics ( morphine)
anticholinergics (atropine)
sedatives ( diazepam)
