Prenatal/Birth/Newborns - Ch. 3 Flashcards
three stages of pregnancy
g/e/f
germinal (2 weeks)
embryo (2-8)
fetus (8-end)
implantation
blastocyst buries into uterine lining, 7/9th days
amnion
membrane on the blastocyst that fills with amniotic fluid in order to protect the developing organism
chorion
villi that surround the amnion
the umbilical cord connects the _________ to the developing baby
placenta
ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm
ecto: forms the skin, brain
meso: forms the muscles
endo: forms the organs, digestive system, lungs
neural tube
primitive spinal cord, where neural development is at its fastest
1st, 2nd, 3rd trimesters
1st: until the end of the 3rd month, where heartbeat develops
2nd: until 23rd week, where most organs develop
3rd: 23-end, age of viability (where baby can first survive on its own)
teratogens
d/t/h/D/a/c/c/a/m
any environmental agent that causes damage during the prenatal period
disease; harms visual, hearing, heart, brain, increases stillbirth risk and are susceptible after birth
toxoplasmois (undercooked meat, cats): brain damage, infections, jaundice, risk of stillbirth, risk of seizures after birth
herpes: automatic c-section, can infect baby if goes through infected coochie. chickenpox can make baby blind
DES: drug used for those who miscarried, but caused genital/cervical cancer in babies born when in young teenage years
aspirin: heard problems, hemorrhaging when giving birth, low birth weight
caffeine: maybe in humans, fucks with baby sleep cycles
cocaine: placenta stope supporting the fetus, often resulting in death, also induced contractions, awful
alcohol: cognitive issues, vision and hearing, born tiny, facial deformity (flat face/wide eyes)
marijuana: low birth weight, overlap w/ cigarette use, chronic oxygen deprivation
fetal alcohol spectrum disorder
outcomes caused by prenatal alcohol exposure!
fetal alcohol disorder symptoms
slow growth, short eyelids, thin upper lip, flat face, brain injury
partial fetal alcohol syndrome symptoms
defects are lower/less
alcohol related neurodevelopment disorder symptoms
at least 3 areas of mental functioning are screwed but they look normal
poor nutrition suppressed _________ system development, leading to a lot of ____________ illnesses!
immune system, respiratory
emotional stress __________ the fetus of oxygen, because stress hormones direct blood elsewhere.
