idiopathic iatrogenic - chemo, surgery autoimmune - coeliac, T1DM, adrenal insuff, thyroid genetic - FHx, Turner's syndrome infections - mumps, TB, CMV

presentation
A
irreg menstrual cycles 2ry amenorrhoea hot flushes night sweats vaginal dryness

diagnosis
A
women <40yrs with typical menopause symptoms plus elevated FSH
FSH should be persistently >25 on 2 consecutive samples >4wks apart

women with premature ovarian failure are at higher risk of X due to lack of oestrofen
A
cardiovascular disease stroke osteoporosis cognitive impairment dementia parkinsonism

Mx
A
HRT until at least usual age menopause
- traditional HRT
- COCP
