-collection and preservation of specimens
Section 2
- A person qualified to assist a medical technologist and/or a qualified pathologist in the practice of medical technology
- Has failed the board examination for medical technologists but obtained a general rating of at least 70%
MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
Someone trained to collect blood samples (skin puncture, venipuncture, arterial puncture)
Part of the practice of medical technology in the Philippines
In other countries: a specially trained person responsible for drawing blood samples from patients
PHLEBOTOMISTS
Examines human specimens to detect cancer cells or diseases
Examines smears of body fluids or tissues for abnormal changes in color, size, or shape (e.g. Papanicolaou smear)
Abroad: 1-year, post-baccalaureate training program in a hospital
In the Philippines: may also be performed by medical technologists assigned in the histopathology section of the laboratory
CYTOTECHNOLOGIST/CELL PROCESSOR
Routinely prepare, process, and stain biopsies and tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist
May also initiate or develop new procedures, evaluate QC data, or operate an electron microscope
Abroad: a 12-month training program has to be completed and passed
HISTOTECHNOLOGIST/TISSUE PROCESSOR
A medical technologist who has worked for a number of years in a specific discipline
May take an examination to demonstrate the expertise in the discipline (e.g. the Specialist in Blood Bank examination in the US)
May have been stationed in a particular laboratory section for a long time
May have taken and passed proficiency trainings conducted by the DOH
SPECIALIST
Studies the structure of human chromosomes and their genetic content in relation to health and disease diagnosis (leukemia, tumors, birth defects)
Must master the art of cell culture, chromosome banding and analysis, and photography and dark room skills
CYTOGENETIC TECHNOLOGIST
