Pregnancy Flashcards
Where does fertilization occur?
Fallopian tube
Explain the zygote?
- in the fallopian tube
- Made of stem cells which are undifferentiated (no function)
Explain a blastocyte?
- in the uterus
- Created by differentiation in the zygote
- performs implantation by attaching to endometrium
What happens after implantation?
The process of gastrulation that change blastocyte into a gastrula
What are the 3 germ layers and their functions?
Ectoderm: outer layer - develops C.N.S and P.N.S as wells as skin
Mesoderm: middle layer - muscular system, skeletal system (cartilage), reproductive system and cardio vascular (heart)
Endoderm: inner layer - digestive system and respiratory system
Explain Positive Feedback Loop?
Chrorion secretes hCG, then it goes into the ovary (corpus luteum), which secrete progesterone, then to the uterus, preventing contractions
What happens with pregnancy hormones on trimester 2 & 3?
Placenta secretes progesterone
What happens during birth?
Progesterone levels drop which allow contractions to begin
What are the 2 hormones that causes contractions and explain them?
Oxytocin: origin - pituitary: target - uterus
Prostaglandins: origin - placenta: target - uterus: causes cervical dilation
Explain the hormones in lactation?
Prolactin: origin - pituitary: target mamory glands: makes milk
Oxytocin: origin - pituitary: target- mamory glands: causes contractions to push out milk
What is the zygote made of?
Stem cells
