Male/Female Repro Flashcards
What do the testicles do?
Spematogenesis (sperm creation)
Function of Epididymas?
Stores and matures sperm
Function of Vas deferens?
Transports sperm out of Epididymas
What are the 3 glands and what they do?
Seminal vesicle - fructose fluid for sperm energy
Prostate - alkaline (neutralizes vagina)
Cowper’s Gland - motility (swimming)
Urethra?
Exit for urine
Explain feedback loop for male reproduction?
Hypothalamus, and then GnRH stimulates pituitary gland, secretes FSH and LH, FSH stimulates Sertoli cells and seminiferous tubule, for supporting sperm, LH stimulates interstial cells, to create testosterone.
Seminiferous tubules?
Sperm divides and differentiates
Sertoli cells?
Nourishment and support for developing sperm
Interstitial cells?
Produces testosterone
Ovaries?
Produces hormones and ova (egg)
Fallopian Tube?
Transports ova and site of fertilization
Uterus?
Site of implantation where pregnancy starts
What is it called the first 9 weeks of pregnancy?
Embryo
What is it called in pregnancy after 9 weeks?
Fetus
Corpus luteum?
- Formed by the cells of the follicle and secretes hormones
- Desenerates without pregnancy
Progesterone?
Thickens and maintains
Estrogen?
Builds endometrium
Describes the 4 phases of menstrual cycle?
- Flow phase (0-5 days): -estrogen and progesterone low
- Follicular phase (6-13 days) Left side of feedback loop:
- high estrogen
- making endometrium grow - Ovulation (day 14):
- LH surges - Luteal phase (15-28 days) Right side of feedback loop:
- progesterone thickens and maintains endometrium
Explain the female reproduction feedback loop?
Hypothalamus, to the pituitary gland, secretes FSH and LH, to the ovary, follicle is stimulated creating high estrogen and low progesterone, corpus luteum stimulated creating high progesterone and low estrogen.
