Precipitation Reactions Flashcards
What is dissociation
Dissociation is what happens when an ionic solid dissolves.
The solvent molecules surround the ions in the lattice and break it apart
When ions are dissolved in a solution the subscript (aq) for aqueous is used to show that the ions are dissolved in water
What are precipitation reactions
When two ionic compounds are mixed, the ions sometimes react to form an insoluble solid called a precipitate
Why do precipitate reactions occur
Because there is a stronger attraction between the ions forming the solid.= than the ions and the solvent
What is conservation of mass
Matter cannot be created or destroyed
This means that the number of atoms in the reactants is always equal to the number of atoms in the products
