Q

why is meiosis important

A

Because it allows for genetic variation between parents and their offspring through sexual reproduction

Q

How many chromosomes do gametes have

A

Gametes contain half the number of chromosomes of somatic cells. Gametes only have one copy of each chromosomes

Q

When sexual reproduction what happens to the two haploid cells (sperm and ova)

A

Both sperm and ova combine during sexual reproduction to form a diploid cell which will turn into an organism

Q

What are diploid cells

A

Cells that have two copies of each chromosome (example a baby having 2 of the first chromosome one from the mother and one from the father)

16
Q

What are the phases of Meiosis I

A

Interphase
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
Cytokenisis

17
Q

What are the phases of Meiosis II

A

Interphase
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
Cytokenisis

18
Q

What is the difference between Meiosis process and Mitosis process

A

In the metaphase of Mitosis double stranded chromosomes line at the equator and are split by the spindle fibres (Anaphase) however with meiosis Homologous pairs line up at the equator and are each chromatids are pulled (Anaphase)

19
Q

What is the difference between Meiosis I and Meiosis II

A

In Meiosis I the spindle fibres deal with double stranded Homologous pairs (meaning they are separated and not split) while in Meiosis II the spindle fibres split the sister chromatids (into single stranded chromosomes
