Bonding Flashcards
What are the three types of bonding
Ionic
Covalent
Metallic
What is metallic bonding
Metal atoms have a weak hold on their valence electrons
The valence electrons are free to move through the metal without being bound to one particular atom
Electrons are shared and are called delocalised electrons
(Conduct electricity and heat, Malleable, High melting point)
What is covalent bonding
Non metal atoms bond together by sharing valence electrons, they are shared so that each valence shell is full
(Brittle and break easily, non conductor, low boiling/melting point)
What is ionic bonding
Ionic bonding forms when a metal atom transfers its valence electrons to non metal atoms
Metal becomes positively charged and the non metal becomes negatively charged
