Mitosis Flashcards
What is cell division
Cell division is the process that produces new cells
In unicellular organisms?
Cell division is a form of asexual reproduction
In multicellular organisms?
cell division is used for growth and repair of the organism and to produce reproductive cells
What are the two types of cell division
Mitosis
Meiosis
Where does mitosis (a form of cell division) occur
They occur in somatic cells
What are somatic cells
Somatic cells are all cells except reproductive cells
What does meiosis produce
Meiosis is a form of cell division that produces gametes
What are gametes
Gametes are reproductive cells (sperm and ova)
What is mitosis
Mitosis occurs when a parent cell splits into two daughter cells, they are both identical to the original cell and to each other
What is mitosis responsible for
Mitosis is responsible for growth repair and replacement of cells within living organisms.
What is interphase
Interphase is conducting the general day to day process of the cell (the phase when DNA replication occurs) (DNA appears in chromatin form)
What is prophase
When the nuclear membrane around the nucleus dissapears and spindle fibres form and attach to chromosomes
What is metaphase
When spindle fibres move the double stranded chromosomes towards the equator of the cell.
What happens at the end of metaphase
Double stranded chromosomes are lined up along the equator of the cell. (spindle fibres are attached to the centromeres of the double stranded chromosomes)
What is anaphase
When spindle fibres contract and pull the double stranded chromosomes apart. Sister chromatids separate at the centromere
