Q

storage lipids (neutrals)

A

triacylglycerols: glycerol, 3 FA tails

ester linkage to glycerol, stored in cells for energy reserve

form large spherical fat droplets in the cell cytoplasm

Q

Membrane lipids (polar)

A
  1. Phospholipids:
    - 1.1 Glycerophospholipids: glycerol, 2 FA, 1 PO4, 1 alcohol
    - 1.2 Sphingolipids: spingosine, 1 FA, 1 PO4, choline
  2. Glycolipids:
    - 2.1 Sphingolipids: sphingosine, FA, mono or oligosaccaride

All polar will form self-sealing lipid bilayers

Q

ceramide

A

fatty acid + sphingosine

if add phosphate and choline: sphingophospholipid
if add saccaride: sphingoglycolipid

Q

cholesterol role in membrane

A

regulates fluidity

decreases fluidity/permeability because of rigid planar steroid ring structure
