Pre-mat Lipids Flashcards
Lipid
any non-polar substance containing repeated methylene groups that is nearly or totally insoluble in water, but is soluble in other non-polar solvents
storage lipids (neutrals)
triacylglycerols: glycerol, 3 FA tails
ester linkage to glycerol, stored in cells for energy reserve
form large spherical fat droplets in the cell cytoplasm
Membrane lipids (polar)
- Phospholipids:
- 1.1 Glycerophospholipids: glycerol, 2 FA, 1 PO4, 1 alcohol
- 1.2 Sphingolipids: spingosine, 1 FA, 1 PO4, choline - Glycolipids:
- 2.1 Sphingolipids: sphingosine, FA, mono or oligosaccaride
All polar will form self-sealing lipid bilayers
ceramide
fatty acid + sphingosine
if add phosphate and choline: sphingophospholipid
if add saccaride: sphingoglycolipid
derived lipids
polyisoprenoids: dolichol
eicosanoids
lipid-soluble vitamins: A, E, b-carotene, D2, K1, erosterol
cholesterol role in membrane
regulates fluidity
decreases fluidity/permeability because of rigid planar steroid ring structure
