Rural countryside, lower and higher class, women seen as weaker, limited transport, only upperclass were educated
What sports were popular?
Mob football, animal baiting/hunting, Real tennis (upper class only), cricket, pedestrianism

lower class worked long hours which limited time for sports only played on holy days, upper class had abundance of time

roads were limited and very poor quality, activities were therefore local, upper class travelled via horse and carriage but limited due to road conditions
