A

1845 Polk sent US troops to disputed border area north of the Rio Grande River. In May 1846, Mexican troops ambushed US soldiers. 16 killed and wounded.

Polk declared that Mexicans had ‘shed American blood on American soil’ and asked Congress to declare war.
