What is deixis?
- words whose meaning is context bound; the meaning depends on who is using them, where and when they are being used
What is personal deixis?
- pointing words for people : personal pronouns and possessive determiners
What is spatial deixis?
- pointing words for places and things : adverbs like here and there + demonstrative pronouns and determiners like that,those and this
What is temporal deixis?
- pointing words for time : temporal adverbs like tomorrow, soon, now and also the tense of a phrase
What is deixis a form of?
anaphoric, cataphoric and exophoric reference
What is anaphoric referencing?
refers to a previous reference
What is cataphoric referencing?
refer to a future reference
What is an exophoric reference?
- makes a connection with something outside the discourse
What are speech acts?
communicative acts that carry meaning beyond the words and phrases used within them
e.g. ‘I am sorry’ is performing an apology
Can a sentence mood change with pragmatic intent?
Yes
- e.g “It’s cold in here” = sentence mood is declarative BUT the pragmatic meaning is ‘close the window’ making the sentence mood pragmatically an imperative
What is conventional implicature?
an inference that arises from the meaning of a word/phrase/utterance
What is conversational implicature?
an inference that arises as a result of shared understanding of how conversation works
What are Grice’s maxims?
- maxim of quantity = only give required information
- maxim of quality = be truthful
- maxim of relevance = be relevant
- maxim of manner = be clear
