What is chromatography? What are the steps?

It’s a technique that can be used to separate dyes in an ink.

1. Draw a line near the bottom of the sheet of filter paper using a pencil. ( pencil marks are insoluble so they won’t dissolve.)
2. Add a spot of ink to the line and place the sheets in a beaker of solvent.
3. Add the solvent used depending on what’s being tested. some compounds dissolve well in water, but other solvents like ethanol are needed.
4. Make sure the ink is it touching the solvent you don’t want it to dissolve.
5. The solvent strips up the paper, carrying the ink with it.
6. Each different dye in the ink will move up the paper at a different rate so the dyes will separate out.
