Chemical Analysis Flashcards
What is a pure substance
A single element or compound not mixed with any other substances
In every day language a pure substance means a substance that had nothing added to it meaning what
It’s unadulterated in its natural state
(Key: Pure elements and compounds melt and boil at specific temperatures)
Define formulation
A complex mixture that has been designed as a useful product
What are some examples of formulation
Fuels
Cleaning agents
Paints
Medicines
Alloys
Fertilizers
Food
How are formulations made
By mixing the components in carefully measured quantities to ensure that the product has the required properties
What does paper chromatography allow
To separate substances based on their different solubilities
What type of phases does chromatography involve
Stationary phase
Mobile phase
What does a pure compound and a compound produce (spot)
A pure compound will produce a single spot in all solvents
The compounds in a mixture may separate into different spots depending on the solvent
How do you calculate the RF value
RF = Distance moved by substance/distance moved by solvent
