Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What is crude oil
A finite resource found in rocks (non-renewable)
How is cude oil formed
Crude oil is the remains of an ancient biomass consisting of plankton that was buried in mud
Crude oil is a mixture of very large compounds what are the compounds
Most of the compounds in crude oil are hydrocarbons which are molecules made up of hydrogen and carbon atoms only
What are the hydrocarbons in crude oil called
Most of them are alkanes
What is the general formula for alkanes
CnH2n+2
What are the first four members of the alkanes
Methane
Ethane
Propane
Butane
Hydrocarbons can be broken down (cracked) to produce what
To produce smaller more useful molecules
How can cracking be done
Catalytic cracking and steam cracking
What do scientists call alkanes
Saturated molecules (this is because the carbon atoms are fully bonded to hydrogen atoms)
What is viscosity
It tells us the thickness of a fluid
As the size of hydrocarbon molecules increases the molecules become more what
Viscous (So very long chains flow more slowly)
What does flammability tell us
Flammability tells us how easily a hydrocarbon combusts (burns)
When the molecular size increases does the hydrocarbon become more flammable or less
Less flammable (Short chains of hydrocarbon are extremely flammable)
What is the boiling point
The temperature at which a liquid turns into a gas
What type of boiling points does short chains of hydrocarbon have
Short chains have a low boiling point and long chains have a high boiling point
