what was the aim of the investigation
to see how depictions of mental health in the media had changed over time by comparing two films “one Flew over the cuckoo’s nest” 50’s and “manic” 90’s. By seeing there were differences between the amount of negative references made towards mental health.
what was the alternative hypothesis?
one-tailed : There will be more negative references and terminology used in the older film “One flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest (50’s) which looks at mental health through a mental institutions set in compared to the newer film “Manic” (00’s) which looks at mental health through mental institutions in the. However negative connotations and references will still be seen throughout each film.
null hypothesis?
there will be no differences between negative references and terminology towards mental health in One flew over the cuckoo’s nest 50’s and manic 00’s - any difference will be due to chance.
method used?
A summative content analysis of two films was taken place, were each film was watched and words selected and then tallied regarding how many times they came up in the films and the characters who said them and to whom.

what was the % of negative words used in manic and OFOTCN?
- 75% in ofotcn
- 61% in manic
what do the results tell us?
The results show that although the vocabulary used to describe mental illness has changed over time for example language such as “loony” and “nuts” was more common in the older films One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, however in the the newer film Manic, words such as “F*cked up” and “ “psycho” were used which shows how the language over time has altered.
what conclusion can be made?
However the number of negative words throughout both films were not significantly different from each other suggesting that attitudes towards mental health have not changed very much over time.
