what is the DSM
diagnostic and statistical manual and diagnosis?
how does it define mental illness?
a clinically significant impairment effecting a persons personal and occupational life.
how does it diagnose mental health
the previous DSM used 5 separate axis, the first three being compulsory.
what is axis 1?
clinical syndromes, which refers to major disorders such as generalised anxiety disorder.
what is axis 2?
personality disorders, this is separated into different personality disorders such as low self esteem. some individuals may have symptoms from both 1 and 2 axis but usual its in one or the other.
what is axis 3?
medical conditions, this is any medical history which may be relevant or a cause for the symptoms being shown, such as a hormone imbalance.
what is axis 4?
psycho-social stressers, this refers to any bad experiences or events which may of linked to the disorder, such as being homeless, or a death in the family.
what is axis 5?
the GAF (global assessment functioning scale 0-100) 100 being functioning normally in society ect…
what is the ICD?
the international classification of diseases.
what does the ICD look at?
the icd looks at the incident (the disorder) and the prevalence ( the frequency symptoms occur)
how is the ICD set out?
it is spilt up into sections categorised using coding for example all disorders are under “F” and depending of what disorder a number will follow.
what is the code in the ICD for schizophrenia?
F20-F29
what is the coding for depression?
F32
what does the new version of the DSM now include (DSM-V)?
different sections, section 1 is an introduction, section 2 goes through different disorders and section 3 looks at cultural differences between disorders - to increase accuracy of diagnosis.
