genetics Flashcards
what % of the population is diagnosed with schizophrenia?
1%
what % of people are diagnosed with first degree relative who has the disorder get it also?
10%
what % of people with a second degree relative with the disorder also gets it?
2-6%
what is the Gene which can cause increased chance of schizophrenia if missing?
22q11 depletion, can increase the chance of getting schizophrenia. 18% of people without 22q11, have schizophrenia which is higher than in relation to 1% population.
what type of genetic variation may cause schizophrenia?
the rare variation, Xq23 region, according to a study done by Kirov et all 52% of people with schizophrenia had this variant - this was not found in 372 controls.
what does epigenetics mean?
this refers to a gene only becoming active after an environmental trigger for example, sexual abuse.
what did Gottesman and Shields find?
when comparing MZ and DZ twins they found a concordance rate for MZ = 47% and for DZ = 9% when measuring schizophrenia.
how might this theory be reductionist?
because they only they don’t consider epigenetics, therefore it could be an environmental factor that triggers the gene rather than just the presence of a gene. this suggests the theory to be simplistic.
