17
Q

How is propeller blade angle changed?

A
  • oil pressure metered by the PIU forces the piston forward to decrease pitch
  • with a decrease in oil pressure, the feathering spring will force the piston aft to increase pitch

18
Q

If the PMU fails, how is propeller blade angle controlled?

A

The mechanical flyweight overspeed governor modulates oil pressure to the propeller pitch change pisto

19
Q

What are the two methods to feather the propeller?

A
  • If the engine is shut down with the PCL and the PMU is in NORM, the PMU sends a signal to the prop servo valve to drain propeller oil pressure.
  • Placing the PCL to cutoff also activates
microswitches that power the feather dump solenoid valve (powered by the PROP SYS CB)
20
Q

What does selecting manual on the start switch do?

A

Selecting MANUAL will engage the starter until the switch is manually moved back to the NORM position.

21
Q

What does selecting AUTO/RESET on the starter switch do?

A

Momentarily placing the starter switch in the AUTO/RESET position automatically engages the starter and energizes the ignition system.

22
Q

How do you know when the igniters are activated?

A

When the IGNITION switch is set to ON or when the igniters are activated in AUTO mode, a green IGN SEL advisory is illuminated.

23
Q

How is the PCL connected to the FMU?

A

both electrically and mechanically with a flexible cable.

24
Q

What design feature prevents inadvertant shutdown with the PCL?

A

The PCL incorporates a cut-off gate to prevent inadvertent engine shutdown.

25
Q

What additional switches are located on the PCL?

A

switches for activating:

  • speed brake
  • rudder trim
  • UHF and VHF communications
  • intercom system
26
Q

What are the two power sources for the PMU?

A
  • A dedicated permanent magnet alternator (PMA), mounted on the reduction gearbox
  • The PMU automatically switches to the 28 VDC battery bus when propeller RPM drops below 40-50% NP, or when the PMA fails
27
Q

What controls whether the PMU is in ground mode or flight mode?

A

weight-on-wheels switches on the main gear struts control
these modes

28
Q

What is idle RPM?

A
  • ground mode: 60-61% N1
  • flight mode: 67% N1 (min)
29
Q

Why would the PMU abort an auto-start?

A
  • if light-off has not occurred within 10 seconds
  • if the PMU projects an impending hung or hot start
  • if ITT exceeds 940 °C for 2 seconds, 870 °C for 4
    seconds, or 840 °C for 19 seconds.
  • if N1 acceleration rate to idle is less than 50% of normal
30
Q

Is auto-start available in flight mode?

A

The engine start sequencing is available for airstarts, but the automatic shutdown feature is disabled when in flight mode.

31
Q

What happens when IOAT is between 96° and 121°C?

A

The PMU defaults to 121 °C for all PMU functions (including IOAT display).

32
Q

What happens if IOAT exceeds 121 °C?

A

The PMU goes offline and will not reset until IOAT has dropped below 121 °C.

33
Q

How do you initiate an automatic start?

A

Advance PCL to auto start position, the ST READY advisory will illuminate. Wait three seconds and then momentarily select AUTO/RESET on the starter switch.

34
Q

What happens during an automatic start?

A

The PMU activates the starter, boost pump, and igniters, and adds fuel at the proper N1 speed. At approximately 50% N1, the starter and igniters are deenergized and the boost pump is deactivated. The engine continues
to accelerate to idle speed (60-61% N1). The propeller
automatically unfeathers during the start as engine oil pressure rises.

35
Q

How can you manually abort an automatic start?

A

By moving the PCL back to OFF, or if the PCL has not been moved past the IDLE gate, by reselecting the STARTER switch to AUTO/RESET.

36
Q

When will engine control revert to manual mode?

A

If faults prevent the PMU from setting the requested power or respecting engine limits, or the pilot switches the PMU OFF, the system will revert to manual mode

37
Q

How will you know the engine is operating in manual mode?

A

Illumination of both the PMU FAIL warning and PMU STATUS caution on the EICAS indicates the system is in manual mode.

38
Q

What special precautions must the pilot take when the engine is operating in manual mode?

A

the pilot must exercise care to ensure N1, temperature, and torque limits are not exceeded.

39
Q

If fault conditions that are not serious enough to revert the system to manual are encountered in flight, when the pilot know about it?

A

The PMU STATUS caution illuminates 1 minute after landing.

40
Q

What does PMU STATUS caution in flight indicate?

A

A fault in either of, or a mismatch between, the weight on wheels switches. This serves to notify the pilot that the
PMU will not revert to ground mode upon landing and landing distance may be slightly longer than normal.

41
Q
A
42
Q

What two gases are contained in the fire warning sensor tubes.

A

The sensor tubes contain helium gas and a hydrogen charged core material. The helium gas responds to the overall temperature, while the core releases hydrogen due to a localized heat source (flame)

43
Q

How will the pilot be alterted to an engine fire?

A

If the diaphragm pressure reaches or exceeds the preset fire detection point, an electrical circuit triggers the red FIRE annunciator light and sounds the aural tone.

44
Q

What does the fire warning test switch check?

A

Electrical continuity and lamp operation for the respective system.

45
Q

What does the firewall shutoff handle do?

A

mechanically cuts off:

  • fuel
  • hydraulic fluid
  • bleed air
