Formation (aka Tactical) Lead Responsibilities

A

(1) Stay clear of traffic, clouds/weather
(2) Remain within the briefed operating area
(3) Comply with local course rules and ATC instructions
(4) Execute appropriate in-flight checks

(6) Always know where wingman is at all times
(7) Remain predictable

Wingman responsibilities

A

(1) Always keep lead in sight
(2) Maintain proper position as directed by lead (flight integrity)
(3) Comply with all of lead’s signals and give a timely response
(4) Backup lead (i.e. navigation, comms, etc.)
(5) Be prepared to assume the lead at any time

A

(1) excessive closure rate
(2) anticipate going acute
(3) lateral separation with proper step down cannot be maintained
(4) Anytime wing feels uncomfortable

(1) lower the nose to maintain step down
(2) reduce power to idle (speed brake as required)
(3) move further away from lead to increase lateral separation
(4) when able call underrun
(5) rejoin in parade position
