POWER PLANT Flashcards
1
Q
What type of engine is in the PA44?
A
- Two Lycoming four-cylinder O-360-A1H6 engines
- Direct drive (crankshaft connected directly to prop), fuel injected & horizontally opposed
- 180 HP @ 2700 RPM Sea Level
- Air cooled
- Oil cooler w/ low temperature bypass system & engine mounted oil filters
2
Q
Which way do each engine rotate?
A
- Left engine clockwise
- Right engine counterclockwise
3
Q
What is the oil cooler?
A
- Oil will flow through the oil cooler when hot enough & needs to cool down
4
Q
LIO-360-B1G6
A
- āLā means left-hand turning
5
Q
The Oil System
A
- Max 8 quarts
- UVU SOP minimum of 6 quarts
- 2 quarts lowest possible amount
- Max oil temperature is 245 degrees
6
Q
Induction Air System
A
- Air used for combustion goes into the engine & through an air filter
- Goes to an induction air box located at the bottom of the engine
7
Q
Induction Air Box
A
- manually operated two-way valve
- allowing filtered induction air or unfiltered heated air into the engine fuel injection servo inlet
- alternate air allows heated air in when induction icing occurs (bypasses air filter if blockage occurs)
- DO NOT use during ground operations
8
Q
Types of Oil that can be used
A
- 15W-50 & 20W-50 (use for all temperatures)
9
Q
Purpose of oil
A
- removes contaminates
- helps engine run smoothly
- lubricates & cools
- can also pitch down to air cool the engines
10
Q
Four Strokes of the Engine
A
- Intake: Air/Fuel mixture being drawn in. Intake valve opens, exhaust valve is closed, piston moving downward in combustion chamber.
- Compression: Air/Fuel mixture is being compressed. Both valves are shut & piston is moving upward.
- Power: Spark plug ignites the air/fuel mixture. Explosion forces the piston downward.
- Exhaust: Exhaust valve opens & piston pushes out burned gases.
11
Q
Cowl Flaps
A
- Each engine has a manually operated cowl flap
- Change the amount of air flowing through engine cowling
- This cools the engine
- Three positions (open, intermediate, closed)
