LANDLOCKED, therefore dependent on neighbouring countries for trade and reliant on their infrastructure system. Eg. Huge transportation costs and no territorial access to seas.

- long term problems of malnourishment made worse by short term disasters
- floods, droughts, plagues of locusts take place in many countries (particularly sSA) at different times in different years. These add to the regular problems from low economic development.

Decreased ability to work means less ability to farm and provide food, hence leads for outmigration to urban areas to find work (often young males) hence increasing poverty.
Decrease ability if poor and malnourished with decrease resistance to disease, and hence decreased energy. Therefore ability to learn and work.
