2: likely prejudice and discrimination leading to tensions and conflict when minority groups lives among majority - even if live peacefully among majority.

FOR:
- proud and embrace the cultural difference of people
- creates a more tolerant society
AGAINST:
- draws up divides, prevents social cohesion and integration of societies
Reasons for development of multicultural societies
- formed by migration
- descendants and intermarriage taken place in last 200 years
- migration may also be the stimulus of it as persecuted groups seek to escape oppression
History of significant migration into UK past 200 years
- 19th century Jews escaping persecution from Russia/Poland
- 19th century Irish people escaping poverty in rural Ireland
- 1930s-1940s Jews and Poles escaping racism in WW2
- 1948-60s Caribbean workers invited to help rebuild postwar Britain, mainly in public services
- 1950s-1960s Asians from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh. Escaping poverty and seeking work in public services and textile industry
- 1970s East African Asians (mainly from Uganda) escaping persecution and Vietnamese escaping war
- 1980s-90s Eastern European refugees escape war and political unrest in Romania and former Yugoslavia
- 2000s Economic migration from Eastern Europe caused enlargement of EU
