potable water Flashcards
1
Q
process for potable water
A
- fresh water in reservoirs (not yet potable as contains microbes)
- first the water is screened to remove solids
- then the water is sterilised ( adding chlorine uv and ozone)
- then add fluoride for dental health
now you have potable water
2
Q
define potable water
A
water with a low concentration of salts, minerals , and microbes
3
Q
what are the 3 sources of waste water
A
domestic
agricultural
industrial
4
Q
what are the 2 ways to desalinate sea water
A
reverse osmosis
distillation
5
Q
explain what happens in desalination in terms of reverse osmosis and distillation
A
- distillation
- heat the water till it evaporates
- let it cool and condense
- collect - reverse osmosis
- semi permeable membrane
- force through with pressure
this then results in pure water
6
Q
what is the disadvantage of distillation
A
- uses a lot of energy
which is expensive
= greenhouse gases
7
Q
what is the disadvantage of reverse osmosis
A
- have to replace the membrane
= expensive
