potable water Flashcards

1
Q

process for potable water

A
  • fresh water in reservoirs (not yet potable as contains microbes)
  • first the water is screened to remove solids
  • then the water is sterilised ( adding chlorine uv and ozone)
  • then add fluoride for dental health
    now you have potable water

Q

explain what happens in desalination in terms of reverse osmosis and distillation

A
  1. distillation
    - heat the water till it evaporates
    - let it cool and condense
    - collect
  2. reverse osmosis
    - semi permeable membrane
    - force through with pressure

this then results in pure water

Q

what is the disadvantage of distillation

A
  • uses a lot of energy
    which is expensive
    = greenhouse gases
