CRACKING Flashcards
what are the 2 key features of alkanes
have the general formula CnH2n+2
only have single covalent bonds between carbon atoms
what process converts long-chain hydrocarbons into short-chain hydrocarbons
cracking
what are the 2 ways to carry out cracking
catalytic cracking
( high temperature and a catalyst)
steam cracking
(high temperature and steam)
what makes alkenes different to alkanes
they have a carbon carbon double bond
why are alkenes useful
- alkenes can be used to make polymers
- alkenes are also used as the starting material for other useful chemicals
what reagent do you use to test for alkenes and what is a positive result
test for alkenes using bromine water which is orange and shake if an alkene is present it will turn colourless
