IDENTIFYING NON METAL IONS Flashcards
1
Q
method for testing for carbonate ions
A
- add dilute hydrochloric acid to the sample
- the acid will react with the carbonate to produce carbon dioxide gas. We will see fizzing
- bubble the gas through lime water, if it goes cloudy it proves that we have carbon dioxide and therefore have the carbonate ion
2
Q
method for testing for the halide ions
A
- add dilute NITRIC acid to the sample
- add dilute SILVER NITRATE solution
- halide ions will produce a precipitate of the silver halide (each halide makes a different coloured precipitate)
3
Q
what colour precipitate do chloride ions form
A
white precipitate of silver chloride
4
Q
what colour precipitate do bromide ions form
A
cream precipitate of silver bromide
5
Q
what colour precipitate do iodide ions form
A
yellow precipitate of silver iodide
6
Q
method for testing for the sulfate ions
A
- add dilute HYDROCHLORIC acid to the sample
- add BARIUM CHLORIDE solution
- if sulfate ions are present we will see a white precipitate
