What are the clinical features of post-thrombotic syndrome?
A
- Painful, heavy calves
- Pruritus
- Swelling
- Varicose veins
- Venous ulceration

What is the physiological cause of post-thrombotic syndrome?
A
Inflammation secondary to chronic venous hypertension due to venous insufficiency and venous outflow obstruction.

How should you prevent post-thrombotic syndrome?
A
Compression stockings should be offered 1 week after diagnosis or when swelling is reduced sufficiently and as long as there are no contraindications. (Ensure ankle pressure greater than 23 mmHg.)

What advise should you give about wearing compresion stockings?
A
- Advise patients to continue wearing the stockings for at least 2 years
- Ensure that the stockings are replaced two or three times per year or according to the manufacturer’s instructions
- Advise patients that the stockings need to be worn only on the affected leg or legs.
