Post Cranial Skeleton Flashcards
What does the axial skeleton consist of?
Skull, vertebrae, ribs and sternum
What does the appendicular skeleton consist of?
Fins and limbs
What are the functions of axial skeleton of the vertebrae?
Protect spinal cord and dorsal vessels, provide muscle attachment, suspend body and for locomotion
What does a typical human vertebrae consist of?
Centrum, process and neural arch
What is a notochord?
A fluid filled, collagenous rod
What develops around the notochord?
Vertebral column
Where is the notochord located?
Ventral to the developing spinal cord
Where does the notochord run along?
It runs along the longitudinal axis of the body
What are the 4 types of centra?
Opistocoelous, Procoelous, Amphicoelous and Acoelous
What is the Acoelous?
Good for resting compression. Is human and well developed for handling forces
What is the Opistocoelous/ Procoelous?
Balls and socket joint formed by adjacent vertebrae
Do fish have necks?
Nope
What are the two regions of a fish vertebrae?
Trunk and caudal
Describe the vertebrae of a fish vertebral column?
Tall and thin, allowing for undulating movement and preventing telescoping
Does a fish have multiple or few centra in a vertebra?
Multiple
Why are the processes of a fish vertebra vertical?
Due to restriction of movement
Where do the spinal nerves pass through a fish vertebra?
Through the neural process
What are the two different tails in a fish called?
Heterocercal Tail and Homocercal Tail
What type of fish has a heterocercal tail?
Chondrichthyes (shark and rays)
What type of fish has a Homocercal tail?
Osteichthyes
Which type of tail generates lift?
Heterocercal Tail
What type of tail achieves lift by other means (air bladder)?
Homocercal Tail
Which way is a vertebrae directed in Heterocercal Tails?
Dorsally
In what way are Neural spines of Homocercal tails directed?
Dorsally
