Rocks are gathered together to form walls of loose volcanic rock, that protect the vines, that grow as high as 100m, located near the western coast of the island. The black basalt stones first had to be removed from the ground to render the soil fertile and then were used to built the walls. The plots are divided into** jeiros(jarao), servidoes, canadas and currais (curral) created by traverses in order to facilitate access and wind protection. The bocainas provide exiguous paths from curral to curral, in which one to six vines are planted.
**
Circular walls were built for banana cultivation, altough some of them are used today for grapevine cultivation and vice versa.
