Population growth Flashcards
How is population growth determined from birth, death, immigration, and emigration?
If the amount of births is higher than the deaths
What is exponential growth?
Growth of a population with no limiting factors, the graph steadily rises
What is logistic growth?
Logistic growth is what will happen (the logical graph) this growth starts out slow and ends slow when it reaches the carrying capacity
When is population growth highest in exponential and logistic growth?
When the births and deaths are similar
What does the variable N stand for?
Population size
What does the variable t stand for?
Time
What does the variable dN/dt stand for?
Population growth rate
What does the variable r stand for?
Maximum per capita growth rate
What does the variable No stand for?
The initial population size
What is the definition of density dependent and an example of it?
Density dependent will have a major impact on growth as the population gets more dense. It is also biotic.
Ex: There is a very contagious disease that can kill a certain organism
What is the definition of density independent and an example of it?
Density independent has an impact on growth no matter what the density is.
Ex: There is a flood that kills some of the organisms
