3.2 Biodiversity Flashcards
Ecological succession
Transition in species composition over time
Primary succession
Begins with a lifeless area without soil
Secondary succession
An area that has an established climax community but then has to restart growing
Pioneer species
plants such as mosses, ferns, and lichen
Seral stages
A layer of soil develops, grasses, flowering plants, and small shrubs grow
Climax community
Large slow-growing trees are established
Species Richness
The number of species found in a given area
Species Evenness
how similar the abundance of different species are
Genetic Diversity
the range of different inherited traits within a species
Ecological Diversity
includes the variation in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems
Keystone species
an organism that helps define an entire ecosystem
Invasive Species
Species that are not native to an area
What is the difference between Primary and Secondary?
Primary is when things first start to grow in an area and secondary is when things have already grown in an area
How do invasive species affect biodiversity?
They made the biodiversity decrease
What is the R value?
Species richness
