Population Evolution Flashcards
What type of selection is occurring when extreme phenotype is favoured?
Directional selection
What type of selection is occurring when extreme trait values favoured over intermediate values?
Disruptive selection
What type of selection is occurring when the population mean stabilizes on an intermediate value?
Stabilizing selection
Whta is microevolution?
Change in allele frequencies in population over generations
What is the change in allele frequencies due to random chance?
Genetic drift
What is the gain or loss of alleles due to immigration or emigration of individuals from a population in or out of a population?
Gene flow
If 2 populations of the smae species have the same allele frquency, does that mean they have the same genotypic frequencies?
No.
What is the null hypothesis that the gene is not currently evolving?
No natural selection, no genetic drift, no gene flow, no mutations and random mating.
What is a population?
Organisms of the same species living in the same geographical region, interacting
What are the four different species concept? (PEMB)
Phylogenetic, ecological, morphological, and biological species concept
Differentiate between the four species concepts.
Phylogenetic - how closely related individuals are evolutionary; morphological - how they look; ecological - role; and biological - whether or not they can produce offspring.
What is the bad effect of gene flow?
It can slow adaptation to slow conditions.
What are the benefits of gene flow?
It can reduce impacts of habitat fragmentation and can restore genetic variation in small populations that was lost due to drift
What is sexual dimorphism?
When male and female of the same species do not look the same
Why would females choose males with showy traits?
Signals of male quality
