Origin of Species Flashcards
There are two groups of frogs that are extremely similar in appearance and live together in the same lake. What might prevent them from breeding?
Behavioural isolation, tenporal
What are some limitations of the biological species concept?
Cannot be applied to preserved specimens, fossils, and asexual organisms; and it emphasizes absence of gene flow
Why might grolar bears have reduced fitness compared to polar or grizzly bears?
Because they are not as well as adapted, are not specialized for the habitats.
How does speciation occur?
Geographic isolation sets the stage, evolve independently (mutation, natural selection and drift), and reproductive isolation may result from this genetic divergence.
What is polyploidy?
Unintentional doubling of chromosome number
What is the difference between autopolyploids and allopolyploids?
Autopolyploids happen within the same species and allopolyploids happen between different species.
Why is polyploid far more common in plants?
Because many can self-fertilize and many can reproduce asexually
How do mole salamanders reproduce?
Asexually, by stealing spermatophores from diploid males of related species to trigger egg development
