Macromolecules Flashcards
What is the study of carbon compounds?
Organic chemistry
What are isomers?
Compounds with the same molecular formula but different structures and properties.
What are the properties of structural, cis-trans, and enantiomers?
Structural isomers have different covalent arrangements, cis-trans isomers differ in spatial arrangements and enantiomers are mirror images of each other
How is thalidomide used in 1950s-1960s?
As a sedative to treat morning sickness in pregnant women
What is the problem with the (S)-enantiomer of Thalidomide?
It is a teratogenic which can disturb the development of embryo or fetus.
What is ATP and what is its function?
Adenosine triphosphate is a primary energy-transferring molecule in the cell that stores potential energy that can be released in a reaction with water.
What are the four large biological molecules that living things are made out of?
Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids
What large biological molecule is the fuel and building material?
Carbohydrates
What is the unifying feature of lipids?
Hydrophobic, because they are mostly carbons which are nonpolar
When you lose weight, where does most of the mass go?
Breath
What is the major function of fats?
Energy storage
What are the important lipids include?
Fats, phospholipids, and steroids
What is one feature of phospholipids?
Amphitatic, which means it has both hydrophilic – phosphate head group – and hydrophobic – fatty acid tails – parts.
What happens when phospholipids are added to water?
They spontaneously self-assemble into a bilayer
