  • compelling because they are often true
  • the active character in this story is the medication or treatment modality
  • if the treatment fails then the story fails

what are chaos stories?

A
  • from people who are consumed by their illness
  • follow the outline: ‘and then… and then… and then’
  • difficult to listen to because they render all treatments pointless
  • compared to a whirlpool as these stories only belong to the sufferer
  • patient is no longer coherent

what are quest stories?

A
  • the storyline provides stages of a journey (beginning and end)
  • experience of suffering is central to the initial quest but it is by learning the integrity of suffering that is the point of the story
  • can be told as chaos stories but flipped around to a journey in a new light
