What is a PGD?
A
“a written instruction for the sale, supply +- administration of named medicines in an identified clinical situation. It applies to groups of patients who may not be individually identified before presenting for treatment’’

Who can supply/admin a PGD?
A
certain qualified professionals
only as named individuals

What medicines can be included on a PGD?
A
- all POMs, Ps, GSLs
- only certain CDs
- Sch 2: only diamorphine, morphine and ketamine (**only by certain people)
- Sch 3: only midazolam
- any Sch 4 part 1
- any Sch 5
- can exceptionally include unlicenced (off label) if justified

When is best to use PGDs?
A
for single Tx episodes:
- ntrofurantoin UTI
- EHC
- Topical antimicrobials for impetigo, conjunctivitis
- acute analgesia
- immunisation programmes
- intiviral medicines for influenza

LT conditions and PGDs
A
not suitable for LT conditions
- diabetes, hypertension, epilepsy, angina, HF
or
ones that require complex or frequent monitoring
- warfarin, insulin

A
labelled same way if supplied against Rx

requirements for PSDs
A
- doesn’t specify what needs to be on PSD
- don’t need to comply with Rx requirements
- good practice to be checked by pharmacist
