Controlled Drug Accountable Officer
What is a CDAOs?
proper and suitable experienced person appointed/nominated by a designated body to ensure the safe, appropriate and effective management and use of CDs within organisations
- oversees the monitoring/auditing of the management, prescribing and use of CDs
- maintain a record of concerns/incidents regarding individuals and having incident panels if necessary
- sharing info regarding CDs (concerns & incidents)
- attend CD Local Intelligence Network meetings
- appointment of authorised witnesses for the destruction of CDs
What should CDAO not do?
should not prescribe, supply, administer or dispose of CDs as part of their regular duties
What drugs are controlled?
- benzodiazepines
- anabolic steroids
- tramadol
- pregabalin / gabapentin

What do the Schedules 1–5 deal with?

What is Epidyolex?
- contains CBD for medicinal use
- Sch 5 CD because levels of THC are low (<0.1% w/w)
- low risk of abuse
- used in epilepsy
Who regulates CBD products that are classed as ‘novel foods’?
Food Standards Agency (FSA)
What must CBD products that are classed as ‘novel foods’ NOT contain?
must not contain THC which is a controlled substance
GPhC advice on CBD products sold in pharmacy?
GPhC advises that only CBD products which are authorised by FSA should be sold from a pharmacy
