Controlled Drug Accountable Officer
What is a CDAOs?
proper and suitable experienced person appointed/nominated by a designated body to ensure the safe, appropriate and effective management and use of CDs within organisations
- oversees the monitoring/auditing of the management, prescribing and use of CDs
- maintain a record of concerns/incidents regarding individuals and having incident panels if necessary
- sharing info regarding CDs (concerns & incidents)
- attend CD Local Intelligence Network meetings
- appointment of authorised witnesses for the destruction of CDs
What should CDAO not do?
should not prescribe, supply, administer or dispose of CDs as part of their regular duties
What drugs are controlled?
- benzodiazepines
- anabolic steroids
- tramadol
- pregabalin / gabapentin

What do the Schedules 1–5 deal with?
deal with levels of control
What do the Classes A,B,C deal with?
deal with levels of penalty for offences
Who advises the Government/Secretary of State/Ministers of Health about controlled drugs?

What class of drug is raw cannabis?

What class of drug is cannabis for medicinal use?
Sch 2 CD

What is Epidyolex?
- contains CBD for medicinal use
- Sch 5 CD because levels of THC are low (<0.1% w/w)
- low risk of abuse
- used in epilepsy
Who regulates CBD products that are classed as ‘novel foods’?
Food Standards Agency (FSA)
What must CBD products that are classed as ‘novel foods’ NOT contain?
must not contain THC which is a controlled substance
GPhC advice on CBD products sold in pharmacy?
GPhC advises that only CBD products which are authorised by FSA should be sold from a pharmacy

Who should initially Rx unlicensed cannabis medicines?
should be prescribed by a doctor who is listed on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council and who has a specialist interest in the condition being treated (can find in GMC online register)
NICE guidelines and cannabis based products
NICE guidance does NOT recommend the use of these products to treat chronic pain
What is Sativex?
cannabis based oromucosal mouth spray containing CBD and dronabinol
indication of Sativex
Indicated as a Tx for Sx improvement in adults with mod-severe spasticity due to multiple sclerosis

no CD requirements
CD register and Sativex
legally don’t have to make CD register entry
** BUT required to keep records of Sativex
** Home Office strongly recommends using the CD register
