What must container be labelled with? - LEGAL
- Name of person who med is to be administered
- Name and address of person who sells or supplies
- Date of dispensing
- Name of the product
- Directions for use of the product
- Precautions relating to the use of the product
recommendations for label - good practice
- ‘Keep out of the sight and reach of children’
- ‘Use this medicine only on your skin’ where applicable
- BNF cautionary and advisory warnings (shake bottle, store in fridge…)
Does pharmacist have to contact prescriber to make changes to dispensing label?
NO
Can pharmacist substitute branded med with generic?
NO
What records can you make if you amend a dispensing label with something different than the Rx (good practice)?
make note on Rx - sign, date, GPhC number
add note to patient’s PMR

What needs to be on label of meds broken down from bulk containers?
- Name of product
- Appropriate quantitative particulars (i.e. the ingredients)
- Quantity in the container
- Special handling or storage requirements (if any)
- Expiry date
- Batch reference preceded by BN or Lot No
licence for breaking down bulk containers?
no licence needed providing the pharmacy supplying the medicine is the same pharmacy who pre-packages the containers
When is licence needed for pre-packing medicines?
assembly/pre-packing medicines by pharmacy which will be supplied to separate legal entity (another NHS trust/pharmacy) required a licence from MHRA
