A
abnormally large level of amniotic fluid; amniotic fluid index that is above the95th centilefor gestational age

Causes of polyhydramnios
A
- Idiopathic (50-60%)
- Pathology of foetal swallowing
- Duodenal atresia
- Anaemia
- Maternal diabetes
- Macrosomia
- Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome

What are some causes of foetal swallow pathology that can cause polyhydramnios
A
Oesophageal atresia, CNS abnormalities, muscular dystrophies, congenital diaphragmatic hernia

Symptoms of polyhydramnios
A
- Abdominal discomfort
- Pre-labour rupture of membranes
- Preterm labour
- Cord prolapse

Signs of polyhydramnios
A
- LFD
- Malpresentation
- Tense shiny abdomen
- Inability to feel foetal parts

USS findings in polyhydramnios
A
- Amniotic fluid index (AFI) or maximum pool depth (MPD)
- AFI > 25
- DVP >8cm

A
Usually none required
