Define Discipline?
Any formal corrective action taken by the department toward any member who violates policy, rules, regulations or statute.
Pre-disciplinary measures include counseling memos, deficiency notices and performance expectation memos, may be used as preliminary corrective actions in appropriate cases

What are the types of disciplinary action?
- Written Reprimand-signed by the member and made part of their personnel file
- Suspension
- Demotion
- Dismissal
The type of disciplinary action chosen shall be appropriate to the seriousness of the violation
What are the disposition of complaints?
- Unfounded-Did not occur
- Exonerated - Acts did occur but was justified
- Not involved - member was not involved
- Not sustained -investigation fails to discover sufficient evidence to prove or disprove
- Sustained -sufficient evidence to clearly prove misconduct
Who can approve discipline that exceeds a 24 hour suspension?
The appropriate Assistant Sheriff or Commander
What type of discipline can a division commander approve?
Written reprimand up to a 24 hour suspension
What type of discipline can a supervisor approve?
Any supervisor may administer an oral reprimand to a subordinate in his command.
Any other type of disciplinary action may be recommended by a supervisor to their superior
Division Commanders are authorized to issue written reprimands for performance deficiencies under what guideline?
- Written reprimands must be properly documented
- They may not be issued in any case where the member must be interviewed or required to provide written documentation, to determine if the alleged act occurred-I/A for that
- Division commander will first submit copies of all documentation, appropriate memorandums from supervisors, a brief summary for cause for the action and a draft written reprimand to their assistant sheriff or commander for review/approval
- The package will be forwarded to I/A and all materials reviewed. I/A will then create a PI file and issue an I/A tracking number
- The P/I file will be returned to the division and a final written reprimand shall be prepared by the division and signed by the division commander and acknowledged by the effected member (signed or refused)
- The original written reprimand will be given to the member, two signed copies along with all supporting documentation will be forwarded to I/A for retention. The complete written reprimand will be referenced in the member personnel file
- The member’s rights are guaranteed by the county grievance procedure
- The records pertaining to the written reprimand will be retained for 5 years after the investigation is closed in accordance to Department Records Control Scedule
