Should members report for duty if they consumed alcohol or drugs?
Members who have consumed alcohol or taken any drugs that would tend to adversely affect their senses or judgement shall not report for duty

Is the odor of alcohol on an employee’s breath evidence of a violation?
Yes, The odor of alcohol on a members breath or person will be considered presumptive evidence of a violation of policy 1012

Can a member possess alcohol on duty?
Department members SHALL not purchase or possess alcohol on County property, at work or while on duty except during the course and scope of a specific duty
Members off duty will not display uniform insignia or badges during the purchase of alcohol
Alcoholic beverages shall not be brought in department premises except in furtherance of a law enforcement task or approved activity.

Can department members use prescribed medication while on duty?
Yes as long as the medication does not impair their ability to perform their work.

What should an employee do if they are assigned medication with impairing side effects?
The employee should contact their immediate supervisor.
No member shall be permitted to work or drive a department-owned vehicle while taking such medication without a written release for their doctor

What can members do if the wish to get help for drug and or alcohol problems?
Members may contact professionals Standards, their insurance or the Employee Assistance Program for additional information.
It is the responsibility of each employee to seek assistance before substance abuse leads to performance problems.
