What is the field supervisor responsible for when his deputy is initiating a pursuit?

1. Immediately ascertain all reasonable information to assess the situation and risk factors associated to ensure the pursuit is within department guidelines.
2. Exercise management and control of the pursuit
3. Refrain from being a participant, if a participant the supervisor will discontinue as soon as the primary or secondary unit arrive.
4. Ensure no move than the required units are involved
5. Terminate pursuit if it is unjust to continue
6. Ensure aircraft is requested
7. Ensure proper radio channel is being used
8. Notification and coordination with outside agencies if needed
9. Controlling and managing units if pursuit enters another jurisdiction.
10. Prepare post-pursuit critique and analysis for training purposes

The field supervisor shall complete a Pursuit Report form (CHP 187a) as mandated by vehicle code 14602.1.

The CHP 187a will submitted with the pursuit evaluation (copies to training division commander) to the department commander.
