The “will to power”, “will to manage”, and “empathy are?
Three elements common to all successful managers in government and industry.
Will to power is?
manager’s ability to deal with a competitive environment in honest ethical manner
Will to manage is?
pleasure a manager seeing the objectives accomplished by the people within the organization
Empathy is?
the ability to relate to other people and determine how they best can be helped to develop their full potential.
What is the System, sub-system, event and element in regards to police manager’s responsibility?
They are the 4 common levels in an organization.
The System, sub-system, event and element levels are described as?
System; total organization (Chief), Sub-system; Major divisions/bureau (Captains), Event; Series of individual activities of similar type (Patrol division or Detective division by Lieutenants), Element; (Squad, Sgt/police officer) incidents from which service the community.
Management process is in 3 major areas
Technical factors- investigate crimes/routine patrols, Behavioral factors- verbal/non-verbal and human interaction skills, Functional Factors- controlling the organization, decision making, problem solving, planning.
Scientific Method of management
standard rules, definite work assignments, close supervision, strict control. (Contrast) personal feelings were disregarded, focus on efficiency, personal motivations ignored.
Human Relations management
was more employee centered and individually focused. (Contrast) Primary goal was to be social rewards and little attention to necessity for completion of tasks.
System Management
Combines both Scientific and Human Relations to get a better balance of both.
Theory X is a scientific method approach assumpiton
assumption people don’t like work, needed coercion to do it, needed disciplinary action and control.
Theory Y is a scientific method approach assumption
assumption that humans were creative and wanted to use their imaginations to make contributions to work and did not need strict direction as in Theory X.
