What are the two types of Power? And how are they described?
Formal (Granted by the nature of their position. It comes from outside control. If rely heavily on this believe they are more important then what they are). 2) Informal (Earns over a long period of time and demonstrates they are capable of dealing with the issue of power. Influence others and does not depend on wealth, status or can be bought).
Managers who are 1) “Being Visible”, 2) “Maintain Integrity”, 3) “Maintain Performance” use this main type of power to be effective?
Informal Power.
What does it mean “being visible” in regards to being effective on one of the main types of powers?
Means being available so subordinates can get to know you. Being available and usually knows what to do.
What does it mean “Maintain Integrity” in regards to being effective on one of the main types of powers?
Is the willingness to be open and maintain one’s values and principles.
What does it mean “Maintain Performance” in regards to being effective on one of the main types of powers?
The ability to listen, be open, honest and live up to ones words. Dependable and willing to take on a variety of tasks within their PD.
What is “Control”, “Manipulation”, “Threat”, “referent”, “Needling” and “Coordination” in regards to this chapter?
The 6 basic approaches to the use of power.
What is “Control” as a basic approach to the use of power?
Formal use of power. Emphasizes rank, organizational position and involves authority in controlling others behavior. Advantage: managing situations quickly, coordinate activities, effective in short term projects/emergencies. Disadvantage: Accuracy is sometimes lost, creates moral issues.
What is “Manipulation” as a basic approach to the use of power?
Depends largely on more or less indirect methods of ensuring cooperation and getting things done.
What is “Threat” as a basic approach to the use of power?
Police manager goes outside the rules. Influences subs behaviors by suggesting failure to comply may bring about personally damaging consequences.
What is “Referent” as a basic approach to the use of power?
Uses the name of a higher authority. Either implies it or states it.
What is “Needling” as a basic approach to the use of power?
Police manager constantly makes suggestions or takes advantage of every opportunity to show how bad others decisions is not working and why theirs is better.
What is “Coordination” as a basic approach to the use of power?
Involves sharing power. Most effective use of formal and informal power. Is time consuming. Best used if attempting to bring about change and in resolving conflict.
What are “Personal”, “Social” and “Survival” in regards to this chapter?
Three basic reasons for using power.
The manager who uses this reason for using power is generally trying to enhance their own status, is essentially self-serving, have characteristics including dominance (being in charge), aggression in criticizing others rather defend their own principals, need for personal attention, low needs for nurturing and caring for others are?
Personal power
The manager who using this reason for using power uses their influence over others to achieve some good. Usually score high in perception, achievement, desire to excel and dominance. Low is accepting guilt for their own or others behavior is?
