PNS Flashcards
Sensory/afferent pathway function
sends info up to the brain to be processed via dorsal root of spinal cord
Motor/efferent pathway function
sends signals down to muscles and organs, movement and posture, via ventral root of spinal cord
Innervated organs of the sympathetic nervous system
Skin, sweat glands, eyes, heart, lungs, gut, skeletal muscle
Innervated organs of the parasympathetic nervous system
Eye, heart, lungs, guts, skeletal muscle
Spinal nerves:
- Where are they attached to?
- How many pairs are there?
- What are the 4 divisions?
- Spinal cord
- 31 pairs of spinal nerves
- Cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral
What are the 5 components of a reflex arc?
- Sensory receptor - responds to a stimulus by producing a generator or receptor potential
- Sensory neuron - axon conducts impulses from receptor to integrating centre
- Integrating centre - 1 or more regions in CNS that relay impulses from sensory to motor neurons
- Motor neuron - axon conducts impulses from integrating centre to effector
- effector - muscle or gland that responds to motor nerve impulses
Where is short term/working memory processed?
Primarily cortical areas (e.g., prefrontal cortex)
Where is long-term/implicit/declarative memory processed?
Hippocampus and cortical areas
What is neuroplasticity?
modification of (new or old) neuronal connections
