PNF Stretching. Flashcards
What does PNF mean?
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation.
What is PNF Stretching?
An advanced stretching technique.
Why should performers warm up?
Performers should properly warm up beforehand to maximize effectiveness and safety [increased temp, increases the pliability of muscle fibers, so less likely to tear.]
What do the Muscle Spindles do?
Lie between muscle fibres.
Detect stretch of muscle fibres.
Signal to CNS to make the muscle contract.
This contraction is called the stretch reflex which aims to prevent tearing and overstretching.
What do the Golgi Tendon Organs do?
Found in the muscle tendon.
Detect tension in muscles.
Signal to CNS to relax the muscle.
This is called autogenic inhibition which aims to reduce tension.
How does PNF work?
Do a passive stretch of the leg with your partner.
Hold for 7–15 seconds.
Perform an isometric contraction pushing back into your partner for 7-15 seconds.
Keeping your knee straight, have your partner hold your leg from moving while you try to lift it further back for 7–15 seconds
