Measuring Energy Expenditure. Flashcards
List the Methods of Measuring Energy Expenditure.
Respiratory Exchange Ratio.
Lactate Sampling.
Indirect Calorimetry.
VO2 Max Test.
What does RER Measure?
Allows you to estimate how hard you are working and what is bring used as a fuel source.
What is the equation for RER?
RER = CO2 out / O2 in.
What is Lactate Sampling?
Gradually increasing intensity and measure lactate levels in blood each time.
Swim, cycle or run in a controlled environment.
List the benefits of Lactate Sampling?
Helps to train thresholds/stay below in race.
What is Indirect Calorimetry?
Hooked up to a lab machine.
Values are put into an equation by the machine to calculate ‘energy expenditure’ in kilojoules.
What 3 Values are needed?
RER.
Body mass.
Body temperature.
List the benefit of Indirect Calorimetry.
Know how many calories to consume.
What is the VO2 Max Test?
Treadmill speed or incline is increased every minute.
Gas mask measures O2 inhales and O2 exhales.
Can figure out how much O2 stayed in you and therefore has been kept and used by the muscles.
