Heart Health. Flashcards
Cholesteral. Heart Diseases. Stroke.
What are the types of Cholesterol?
Low density lipoproteins.
High density lipoproteins.
List the Characteristics for LDL.
Bad for you.
Lighter, fluffier.
Get stuck in blood vessels.
Eventually hardens and causes a plaque.
List the Characteristics for HDL.
Good for you.
Dense.
Break down LDL/plaques.
Takes it to liver to be removed.
List the Cardiovascular Diseases.
Heart Disease.
Heart Attack.
Stroke.
Arteriosclerosis.
What is Heart Disease?
When the process of fatty deposits form on the heart, the process of fatty deposits/ plaques/ atheroma being made is atherosclerosis [build up of LDL makes plaques]
What causes Heart Disease?
Caused by Cholesterol [LDL]
What is a Heart Attack?
A ‘heart attack’ is when the atheroma gets so big it blocks the whole lumen, or a piece of it breaks off and blocks the vessel downstream. Blood can’t get beyond that part, heart gets damaged or dies.
What causes a Heart Attack?
Caused by Cholesterol [LDL]
How can Heart Disease result in a Heart Attack?
During Heart Disease, atheroma is built up, and when it gets too big, It blocks the whole lumen. Blood can’t get beyond that part and the heart gets damaged or dies.
What is a Stroke?
A stroke involves blood not getting where it needs to be. This causes part of the brain to get damaged.
What are the two types of Stroke?
Hemorrhagic Stroke.
Ischemic Stroke.
What is a Hemorrhagic Stroke?
Involves blood vessesl bursting.
What is a Ischemic Stroke?
Involves blockage.
What causes a Stroke?
Caused by Cholesterol [LDL]
What is Arteriosclerosis?
The hardening of the arteries?
